What happens during a Rolfing session?

The Holistic Rolfing approach considers the body as an interconnected system, addressing physical structure, movement patterns, breathing, and emotional well-being. The practitioner helps to improve awareness of the client's current movement responses and patterns, which are often restrictive and contribute to pain. After releasing restrictions in the myofascial layers of the body, we further explore more unrestrained movement and integrate the possibility of new movement into everyday activities.

What are the benefits of Rolfing?

Rolfing is a type of therapy that helps release tension in the fascia, which can lead to improved flexibility and range of motion. It can also alleviate stress and anxiety by improving bodily comfort and awareness. This therapy is beneficial for those recovering from injuries as it enhances alignment and movement, which can aid in healing certain injuries. Athletes can also benefit from Rolfing as it may improve alignment, increase flexibility, and reduce muscular tension.

Rolfing can help with:

  • Back pain

  • Sciatica

  • Hip pain

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

  • Lack of mobility

  • Postoperative pain

  • Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)

  • Tension release following trauma

  • EDS and Hypermobility

  • Shoulder Pain

  • Neck pain, headaches, and migraine

  • Chronic tension

  • Repetitive stress injuries

  • TMJ dysfunction

  • S/I Joint dysfunction

  • Frozen shoulder

  • Plantar fasciitis, ankle and knee pain

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

How long is a session?

Timing between sessions is unique to each client’s ability to integrate the work. Many clients book one session per week.  In some cases, where integration takes longer, clients may book as infrequently as one session per month. However, we will take care together to determine a frequency that fits your schedule and your body, while ensuring the gains in between sessions are not lost.

Is it painful?

Rolfing involves deep tissue manipulation but should not cause excessive pain. Feedback on pressure levels is always welcomed and addressed during a session. One thing I specialize in is being able to go deep without exerting a lot of force. You will still get the depth of results you should expect from Rolfing, but the touch is not inherently painful.  In fact, most call me the “gentle Rolfer.”

What do I wear during a Rolfing session?

Wear comfortable clothing like briefs, loose-fitting or yoga shorts or leggings, tank tops, and sports bras that allow freedom of movement.

What to expect after a session.

Most people report feeling taller and lighter, with improved range of motion and fluidity.  There can sometimes be some soreness, which typically resolves within 1 to 2 days.

How much time should I wait between sessions?

Timing between sessions is unique to each client’s ability to integrate the work. Many clients book one session per week. In some cases, where integration takes longer, clients may book as infrequently as one session per month. However, we will take care together to determine a frequency that fits your schedule and your body, while ensuring the gains in between sessions are not lost.

How does Rolfing differ from Massage Therapy?

Unlike massage therapy, which focuses on muscle relaxation, Rolfing targets connective tissues for structural realignment and improved posture. But like a massage, you will feel relaxed afterwards.

How many sessions do I need, and is it covered by Health Insurance?

Based on your individual needs, I provide single Rolfing sessions, a package of three sessions, and a package of ten sessions. Although Rolfing is typically not covered by health insurance, it may qualify for usage with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Find out more about our sessions here.

Are there any age restrictions?

There are no strict age restrictions, but the technique is more suited for adults, older children, and teens. Modifications can be made for younger children.
